Mizzi Studio was approached by the owner of the trendy Bengali home dining restaurant, Calcutta Street, to design the interior of their second restaurant on a vibrant street in Brixton. Their first restaurant in Fitzrovia offers a more traditional, fine-dining experience – we needed to create a space that would reflect the vibrancy of the fast-paced, effervescent Brixton food culture – a restaurant that appealed to younger customers, and told the story of delicious and authentic food.
We designed the restaurant as a homage to Park Street – Calcutta’s spiritual home of live music, and the city’s infamous Jazz scene. Calcutta’s vibrant colours and textures and the abundance character in Park Street’s decaying elegance inspired Mizzi Studio to create vibrant features that both reflected this inspiration whilst simultaneously appealing to the attitude of Brixton. To create this symbiosis, we used reclaimed timbers, metal tiles on original brick walls, retro industrial lighting, and authentic Indian brass-ware. The interior is a bustling den of retro music, artfully placed bric-a-brac, posters and memorabilia from old-school cultural icons such as film maker Satyajit Ray and the musicians who built up the swinging scene of Calcutta’s Park Street in the 50s and 60s. Intimate booth seating, a sprawling open kitchen, and – at the extreme end of the restaurant – a leafy al fresco terrace, make up the bold visual character of this high-impact restaurant.
Our ultimate priority was to evoke the sensation of Park Street, Calcutta without succumbing to kitsch or inauthentic solutions. We used brass signage, indoor palms, authentic Indian mirrors, neon projected signage and posters from renown Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray to add strong characteristics to the place. Working with a tight time scale, we prepared the concept and created an authentic and comfortable restaurant in just under six weeks. We aimed to design a memorable and conversation-worthy space for our client. Our goal was to design a restaurant that evoked the sights and sounds of the Bengali Jazz age. Mission accomplished? We think so.
